"Venom Was a Happy Accident": Venom Only Exists Because Todd McFarlane Hated Spider-Man’s Costume
Todd McFarlane, co-creator of Venom, gave a frank account of the character’s origin while answering Twitter users’ questions in a video for Wired‘s Tech Support series. According to McFarlane, the creation of Venom at the start of his first run on Amazing Spider-Man was “a complete and utter happy accident.””Why? Because when I was taking over Amazing Spider-Man,” McFarlane explains in the video, “Spider-Man was in the black costume, and I didn’t like it! Put him back in the red-and-blue costume!” Rather than abandon the black costume to obscurity, however, McFarlane and co-creator David Michelinie reinvented it as one of the most iconic Spider-Man villains of all time.
