While Mr. Burns was originally intended to be an exaggerated embodiment of corporate malfeasance, he is a helpful team player in The Simpsons season 35, not a villain. The creators of The Simpsons proudly boast that the show has a so-called “Elastic canon.” This means that anything from a character’s birthdate to their death can be retconned without warning to facilitate a gag or storyline. This is how the show justified Homer and Marge attending high school in the ‘70s even though later episodes contradicted this, implying that the couple were still in high school in the late ‘90s. However, this approach is hardly bulletproof.
