The Nun II director Michael Chaves has revealed the film’s devastating ending for Maurice was intentional, due to his later fate in the universe’s timeline. The horror film ends with its antagonist, Valak, seemingly defeated, with Maurice no longer possessed and able to build a life with Sophie and Kate if he chooses. However, the character is destined to die later in The Conjuring universe, the demon still latched onto him during an exorcism performed by the Warrens.
