Star Wars Introduces Surprising Real-Life Tech That George Lucas Never Wanted Us To See

It’s easy to miss, but Ahsoka episode 4 subtly introduced a real-life technology last seen in the Star Wars Holiday Special – which George Lucas famously disavowed. When George Lucas created Star Wars, he knew he had to try to strike a difficult balance. On the one hand, he wanted to ensure viewers had a frame of reference through which to understand this science-fantasy adventure; that’s why some of the technology, such as the targeting scopes on the starfighters, was modeled on things that would be familiar. But he also didn’t want the galaxy to look too close to the world in 1977, because technology was supposed to be advanced.
