New Comic by Award-Winning GENDER QUEER Artist Speaks Out Against Book Banning
The award-winning author and artist of the acclaimed graphic novel Gender Queer has released a new comic speaking out against book banning. Maia Kobabe has been receiving a ton of controversy in the United States for quite some time now due to Gender Queer. The autobiographical graphic novel by Kobabe (who uses the gender-neutral e/em/eir pronouns) is intended for high school readers and focuses on coming to terms with gender identity. This has led to countless challenges by school boards across the country. As a result, Gender Queer has become what Kobabe declares to be “the most banned book in the country” due to it being the center of debate revolving around literature in schools pertaining to gender. Now Kobabe has created a new comic about banned books that aims to shine a light on why it’s important to fight it and what readers can do to put a stop to the movement in the near future.
