Mortal Kombat 2 can’t simply do a traditional tournament story, following its bizarre omission from the first movie. The 2021 reboot marked the first live-action Mortal Kombat movie in nearly 25 years, and the first to embrace a hard R rating. This made for some deliciously gruesome fights, but the story between bouts was lacking. It’s not like the games are renowned for their in-depth narratives, but even the 1995 film featured likable protagonists and villains that kept the film engaging between fights.
