One of Konami’s finest and longstanding creations, Castlevania has successfully wielded the formula of castle climbing and vampire slaying across nearly five decades. The blend of gothic horror and action-adventure proved a hit in the pixel art original on the NES in the 1980s and remains appealing today with anniversary collections and Netflix series debuting in the 2020s. Starting with action platforms of a linear variety, the franchise would go on to spawn an entire genre beyond it with the groundbreaking Symphony of the Night.
