Game of Thrones has a strange relationship with magic. Most iconic events take place in traditional melee combat, throne room negotiations, brutal executions, or other grounded everyday real-world events. When mystical elements appear, they can feel out of place. Hours of swordfights and political trickery are suddenly broken up by a magic wolf or a blast of fire. The death of Renly Targaryen at the hands of Melisandre’s shadow baby is a perfect example.
