Deleted Beetlejuice Scene Reveals The Real Reason Lydia Could See The Dead (Not Just Because She’s “Strange & Unusual”)
A cut line from Beetlejuice went deeper into the reason why Lydia Deetz could see the deceased Maitlands, going beyond her explanation that she’s “strange and unusual.” At the beginning of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) die in a crash that condemns them to haunt their home for 125 years. While they try to scare away their house’s new inhabitants, the Deetz family, only one living character can actually see them: Goth teenager Lydia, played by Winona Ryder. Considering the ghosts are trying to scare Lydia’s parents, the fact that they can’t see them cues the devious “bio-exorcist” Beetlejuice to step in.
