BREAKING NEWS: FG Begins Payment Of ASUU’s Withheld Salaries
The Federal Government, led by Bola Tinubu, has initiated the payment of the withheld salaries of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), according to multiple sources in the academic sector.
The chairperson of ASUU at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, confirmed the development, stating, “Yes, it is true. Payment has started rolling in.”
President Bola Tinubu approved the release of four out of the eight months’ salaries that were withheld during the eight-month strike in 2022 when the ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ was enforced by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, recently announced a 35% increase in university workers’ salaries.
Additionally, the government granted autonomy to universities by removing them from the Integrated Payment and Payroll Information System.
This move eliminates the need for universities to seek a waiver for recruitment and filling vacancies, as revealed through informal consultations with tertiary institution unions.
