The roguelike genre is broad and varied, with its origins going back to the 1980s with the release of Rogue, the genre’s namesake. This genre is technically turn-based by its very definition, though the general perception of roguelikes as a genre has become somewhat warped over the years, incorporating more modern gameplay mechanics and morphing into sub-genres like the action roguelike, which share little in common with Rogue other than its permanent death mechanic.
