In Alan Wake 2, players will be going through a number of fairly large regions, each with a variety of optional tasks and secrets scattered in their nooks and crannies. Although none of these are strictly needed to proceed, it is usually worthwhile to seek them out since they will have items and resources that make surviving Alan Wake 2 a bit more tolerable.
