Coraline made a huge mark in stop-motion animation when it was released. There’d been other stop-motion animated movies over the decades, some of which were box office hits. Even so, there was no doubt that this one fully intended to push the boundaries of what the format could do. It looked more complex and more sophisticated than anything else that had previously come down the pipeline. Coraline took director Henry Selick four years to complete. Coraline opened to $16 million in February 2009 and eventually accumulated an impressive $75 million gross in North America, plus an additional $49 million overseas.
