A sequel, by definition, is a direct follow-up to another movie, but some sequels have little or no relation to their predecessors. They’re called standalone sequels, and a surprisingly high number of them exist. Sometimes, it’s simply because the series wants to veer off and try something new — perhaps to start an anthology series.
