A handful of Oscar-nominated movies in recent years have unexpectedly bombed terribly at the box office. Box office numbers do not always measure the quality of a film as several outstanding movies have failed to draw theatrical audiences for reasons outside the strength of the film alone. Oftentimes great movies are snubbed at the box office because of stiff competition between other releases and the growing sentiment that viewers can simply wait a few months to watch the movies at home.
