WAW!!!! EFCC Arraigns Blindman Over Alleged N19 Million Fraud
In a recent development, Murtala Adebayo, a 72-year-old visually impaired man, found himself arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday.
The charges revolve around an alleged land fraud, where Adebayo is accused of defrauding an individual of N19 million.
Presented before the Ikeja Special Offences Court, Adebayo pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of obtaining money under false pretenses.
The court session saw the EFCC counsel seeking a trial date, with the defense counsel bringing attention to a pending bail application.
During the proceedings, the EFCC requested time to review the bail application, while the defense sought a brief adjournment to address the defendant’s health issues and visual impairment.
The defense counsel emphasized,
“We pray for a short adjournment for the bail application to be heard because of his health status, my lord. He is a 72-year-old man, and he is blind. We also pray that the defendant remains in EFCC custody because of the state of his health so that his doctor can attend to him there.”
The prosecution detailed that the alleged offenses occurred in Lagos in 2015 and 2019.
The charges involve the defendant deceiving Mr. Gafar Ademolake into paying N4.5 million for three plots of land in Ogombo Ajah, which the prosecutor claims was a false representation.
Furthermore, it is alleged that Adebayo received N5.5 million from Ademolake as part payment for 18 plots of land in Ayogbemi Village, Ibeju-Lekki, which he purportedly knew to be untrue.
The prosecutor also claimed that Adebayo acquired two cars valued at N9 million, falsely presenting them as payment for the remaining balance of the 18 plots of land in Ibeju.
The charges brought against Adebayo fall under Section 1(3) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offences Act, 2006.
Justice Mojisola Dada adjourned the case until February 9th for the hearing of the bail application, ordering that the defendant should remain in EFCC custody until then.
