Three Suspects Defraud Residents Of Food Grains Worth Over N81m (DETAILS)
The police in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, have apprehended three individuals for allegedly defrauding four residents of food grains valued at over N81 million.
The suspects, identified as 44-year-old Hajiya Zainab Ahmed from Anguwan Sanusi, Kaduna, Sunday Ezra Haruna, 35, and Ishaku Abdulsalam, 40, from Hotoro Ward in Kano, were arrested for criminal conspiracy, cheating, and criminal breach of trust.
According to Dungus Abdulkarim, the spokesman for the Yobe State Police Command, the suspects posed as workers of a non-governmental organization (NGO) to purchase grains for distribution in internally displaced persons’ camps without immediate payment.
The arrests came after a complaint was filed by Ibrahim Mohammed and Abubakar Usman of Abasha ward, Damaturu, stating that Mohammed Modu of Nayi Nawa Ward, Damaturu, had collected 180 bags of maize valued at N7.4 million but failed to pay within the agreed time frame.
The suspects would allegedly lure victims, mainly farmers and marketers, into contracts to supply food items by posing as NGO workers. They would promise payment after delivery to specific destinations in Borno, Yobe, or other chosen locations.
However, after receiving the supplies, they would delay payment and later sell the grains at significantly lower prices without the victims’ knowledge.
The four individuals defrauded were Mohammed Modu of Nayi Nawa ward, who lost N7.4 million worth of maize, Ibrahim Mohammed and Abubakar Usman of Abasha ward, who lost N22 million worth of maize.
Additionally, Alhaji Arma Yau Yahaya of Bauchi State lost N29.995 million worth of rice, and Ishaku Salihu Chaptu of Mangu, Plateau State, lost N22 million worth of maize.
