RIGHT OR WRONG? Government Plans To Stop Sport Betting

The House of Representatives has made a resolution to halt sports betting in the country, urging the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) to adhere to the Lottery Regulatory Commission Act of 2005.

The decision stems from a motion put forth by Rep. Kelechi Nwogu (PDP-Rivers) during the plenary session in Abuja on Thursday, February 15.

Nwogu emphasized the negative consequences of inadequately regulated sports betting, citing mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and addiction.

He also highlighted the strain on relationships, financial problems, legal issues, and job loss associated with excessive gambling.

The representative stressed that betting has contributed to an increase in crime rates and, tragically, suicides.

Recognizing the need for campaigns to mitigate the adverse social impact and prevent underage participation, the House called on the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to conduct a nationwide awareness campaign.

Additionally, the House mandated the Committee on Inter–Governmental Affairs to hold a Public Hearing on the harmful effects of sports betting in Nigeria.

The committee is tasked with reporting back within four weeks for further legislative action.
