HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty chronicles the true story of how Jerry Buss turned the Lakers into one of the best dynasties in sports. Before becoming one of the faces of the 1980s Showtime Lakers, Buss earned an MD and Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Southern California in 1957. He worked as a chemist for years before joining USC’s chemistry staff and becoming a lucrative real estate investor. Buss would eventually create a real estate empire in Los Angeles by the 1970s, accruing millions of dollars that he would use to purchase the Lakers in 1979.
