Mike Flanagan has directed several horror shows for Netflix, but only his first, The Haunting of Hill House, boasts the best jump scare of the last 10 years. Based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same name, this series centers on the Crain family, who move into the titular building only to find it incredibly haunted. The Crain’s matriarch, Olivia, and her youngest daughter, Nell, are the most sensitive to the spirits of Hill House. The paranormal phenomenon culminates in Olivia’s tragic death, and over two decades later, the Crain siblings are forced to confront their unresolved grief and trauma when Nell dies suddenly.
