The Buccaneers Interview: Creator & EP On Modernizing An Edith Wharton Classic

The Buccaneers joins the long and storied list of classic novel adaptations, with one key difference: the novel on which is it based was never finished by its original author. Edith Wharton passed away before The Buccaneers was complete, and it was published posthumously in 1938. Despite the copious notes she left behind for the outline of the story, no author attempted to follow her work until Marion Mainwaring in 1993 (closely followed by a BBC miniseries with a separate ending in 1995). Interestingly enough, the upcoming Apple TV+ show will be yet another new interpretation that follows in Wharton’s footsteps without regard to other versions.
