Monster Interview: Director Hirokazu Kore-eda On Tapping Into The Nuance Of Different Perspectives

Monster, acclaimed filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda’s most recent directorial effort, is a masterclass in storytelling both on the page and the screen. Unlike the majority of his other movies, however, this one has a separate screenwriter: Yûji Sakamoto (perhaps best known for We Made a Beautiful Bouquet and Matrimonial Chaos). Hirokazu’s 2018 film Shoplifters, which he wrote and directed, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars and helped open the door to a wider appreciation of his work. He also garnered several international awards for 2022’s Broker, and his latest project is just as powerful.
