Miyazki’s Only Movie Not Made With Ghibli Is Still a Classic Worth Seeking Out
With The Boy and the Heron gearing up to be one of Hayao Miyazaki’s best movies ever, it makes sense to start looking back on his legendary career. Miyazaki’s directorial debut was his first and only movie not to be produced by Studio Ghibli, the second feature film in the Lupin III franchise, The Castle of Cagliostro. The Castle of Cagliostro premiered in 1979. Ghibli was founded in 1985. The Castle of Cagliostro may not be a Ghibli movie, but it has many of the hallmarks of Miyazaki’s style and although it was not initially popular, it has gone down as a masterpiece and helped to establish Miyazaki as an icon of anime.
