George Lucas admitted that he found it difficult to write the final duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi – but not the external conflict. Heralded as the most emotional battle in the Star Wars franchise, the father and son clash aboard the Death Star II was necessary to pit the forces of the dark side and light against each other one last time. Luke’s temptation by the dark side was the crux of the battle, which Lucas found particularly hard to pinpoint.
