Barbie is co-written and directed by acclaimed indie filmmaker Greta Gerwig, and she has drawn controversy with the criticism that she sold out by making the highly commercial Warner Bros. movie. Gerwig broke out as a filmmaker in 2017 with her solo directorial debut, Lady Bird, which had a low budget of $10 million but went on to be nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Gerwig then directed the 2019 adaptation of Little Women, which had a budget of $40 million and was nominated for six Academy Awards. Now, the celebrated filmmaker has directed a $145 million movie based on a toy brand.
