Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power uses a handful of characters that were created for the show, while also integrating several from the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, The Rings of Power chronicles the re-emergence of the evil Sauron that leads to the War of the Last Alliance seen in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring‘s prologue. As such, the show pulls several pieces of information from Tolkien’s writings on the Second Age of Middle-earth, despite Amazon only owning the rights for The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Tolkien’s extensive appendices.
