JUST IN : Court Sentences Five To Death For Murder In Rivers
A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has handed down death sentences to five individuals convicted of the murder of Umezuruike Alex, the Onelga Security Peace Advisory Committee (OSPAC) commander in Omudioga community, Emohua Local Government Area.
The convicted individuals, namely Okechukwu Orji, Igwe Promise, Iheanyi Igwe, Morrison Igwe (all from Omudioga), and Goodness Monday (from Akwa-Ibom State), were found guilty of charges including conspiracy, cultism, murder, and illegal possession of firearms.
Justice Sika Aprioku, the trial judge, acquitted the sixth defendant, Alex Deiwe, but affirmed the prosecution’s case against the other five.
The judge sentenced them to death by hanging or, alternatively, administration of a lethal injection until confirmed dead.
The court highlighted that besides murdering the OSPAC commander, the convicts were involved in kidnapping and other criminal activities across the state before their arrest and prosecution.
Umezuruike Alex, the late OSPAC commander in Omudioga, was brutally murdered and dismembered by cultists in 2021 due to his efforts in combating criminal activities in the area.
