Howard Webb Reveals VAR Mistake In Liverpool vs Arsenal Clash (SEE)
The head of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), Howard Webb, has said Arsenal captain, Martin Odegaard should have seen a penalty given against him during their 1-1 draw at Liverpool in December.
Webb stated this while featuring on Match Officials Mic’d Up alongside Michael Owen once again.
He talked viewers through some of the controversial refereeing decisions in the past month.
Odegaard appeared to make contact with his hand on the ball inside his own box having lost his footing in the first half of the match at Anfield.
Referee Chris Kavanagh waved away the appeals for a penalty and VAR official David Coote agreed with the on-field decision.
“The VAR looked at it and thought it was a case of Odegaard trying to make himself smaller by bringing the arm back towards the body.
“That’s the element that’s important here – whether it’s instinctive or deliberate he gets a huge advantage by bringing the arm back towards the ball, and the feedback we got back was very clear; the game expects a penalty, in this situation.
“I would agree, and as such I think this was one that didn’t reach the right outcome,” Webb said.
