BREAKING NEWS: EFCC To Arraign Emefiele May 15 On Three-Count Amended Charge
Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele is set to be arraigned in a Federal Capital Territory court on May 15th by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a three-count amended charge.
The EFCC alleges that Emefiele disobeyed the law and unlawfully approved the withdrawal of N124.8 billion from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation during his implementation of the naira swap policy of the former President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Although the arraignment was initially scheduled before Justice Maryan Anenih, it was adjourned to May 15th as Emefiele was standing trial in another court in Lagos.
Emefiele is also facing trial before Justice Hamza Muazu of the FCT High Court on a 20-count amended charge, including criminal breach of trust and forgery during his tenure as the apex bank’s boss.
Previously, on January 8th, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the FCT High Court awarded N100 million damages in favor of Emefiele against the Federal Government and the EFCC, restraining them from arresting him without a court order.
Emefiele had filed a suit against the Federal Government, Attorney-General of the Federation, EFCC, and its chairman, asserting his fundamental rights to life, personal liberty, fair hearing, and freedom of movement.
He argued that his continued detention without being arraigned in court violated his constitutional rights.
