Benedict Ayade was born on the 2nd of March, 1968 into the family of Mr and Mrs Peter Akinseye Ayade in Kakum, a village in Obudu local government area, Cross River State. He is the current president of Calabar on the platform of People’s Democratic Party. His father worked as a public servant with the water board
He had his early formal tutelage at St Stephen’s primary school and his secondary school education at Government Secondary school, Obudu. He earned his B.sc in Microbiology at University of Ibadan from 1984 to 1988. He then proceeded to obtain his M.sc in Microbiology in 1989 to 1990 and subsequently his Ph.D in Environmental Microbiology from the same University of Ibadan in 1990 to 1994 winning the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo state in 2000 to 2002 and then to his Ph.D at University of Ibadan, winning the best doctorial dissertation award in Environmental Microbiology. He also has an MBA from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. He earned his LLB law degree at Delta State University, Abraka from 2006 to 2010.
Ayade went on to work as a lecturer at Delta State University, Abraka where he was subsequently appointed Professor. Ayade was appointed a Professor at a very young age. Despite being a Professor, his quest for knowledge didn’t end there. The Governor went further to acquire a Law degree and subsequently proceeded to Law school where he was called to the Nigeria Bar as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
From his work in groundwater remediation in Nigeria, Ayade invented a sewage treatment plant powered by solar energy.
Ayade went into politics when contested for a seat in the Nigerian Senate in the 2011 elections as a member of the PDP. Professor Ben Ayade took the political stage by storm, when in April 2011, under the platform of the PDP, he beat old time political greenhorns in the Northern Senatorial District of Cross River State to become a member of “the Red Chamber” of the 7th National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. During his term in the Senate, Ayade held the position of Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology. He was also a member of other Committees such as Petroleum Downstream, Education, Drugs/Narcotics/Crime etc.
Ayade won the gubernatorial poll again on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the April 2015 elections in Cross River State. Ayade recontested in the 2019 Gubernatorial Elections as a member of the People Democratic Party (PDP) and was reelected as the governor of Cross River State.

Ayade is married to Dr. Linda Ayade and blessed with three children.

• On 24 August 2019, Ayade was ordained as the Knight of St. John (KSJ) International by the Roman Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Cathedral, the seat of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Calabar.
