Cyberpunk 2077 Fixes Save File Corruption Bug, Can’t Repair Broken Saves

The latest update to Cyberpunk 2077 addresses only a few of the game’s issues, but one that it does correctly is the save file corruption bug that has plagued PC players. This fix, however, does not repair any save files that were broken prior to the release of this patch. The game has only been out for less than two weeks, but in that time it has been at the center of a lot of drama in the gaming world.

Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most anticipated titles of the year prior to its release. Since then, however, an argument could be made that it is perhaps one of the greatest gaming disappointments of 2020. Despite numerous delays from its original release date, Cyberpunk 2077 was still far from complete when it finally came to gamers. From poor graphical quality on consoles to countless bugs of varying severity, the game was far below the standards developer CD Projekt set leading up to the title’s launch. Now, it seems that the developer is in a mad scramble to fix as many issues as it can in the hopes of bringing the game to the quality level many had expected upon release.

Today, CD Projekt Red announced the release of Hotfix 1.06. Thanks to this patch, PC players will no longer be restricted by the 8 MB save file size limit, but this does not retroactively fix any save files that were corrupted by this bug prior to Hotfix 1.06. Console players, meanwhile, were given improved memory management and stability in the hopes that this would result in fewer crashes. The final adjustment Hotfix 1.06 makes has to do with the Second Conflict quest. Now, the character of Dum Dum should no longer unexpectedly disappear from Totentanz entrance. These were the only changes made according to the announcement.

While only three changes in one patch do not seem like much on its own, the larger response effort that it is a part of is impressive. It seems like CD Projekt listened to the negative reactions to its game and is now doing all it can to keep the reputation that it earned with The Witcher 3. The developer has gone so far as to offer refunds to players and has even removed the game temporarily from some platforms until more of Cyberpunk 2077‘s issues are resolved.

The phenomenon surrounding CD Projekt’s latest title is one of the more curious in gaming history. Many highly anticipated games have disappointed players over the years and those are usually forgotten relatively quickly. Yet despite all of its flaws, Cyberpunk 2077 continues to not only survive but also thrive. The game has sold over 13 million copies despite all of its problems, which suggests that gamers around the world still want it to succeed. CD Projekt has already proved itself with The Witcher 3 and that is no doubt contributing to why Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be getting a pass when other games would be immediately discredited. Hopefully, the updates in the coming weeks will raise Cyberpunk 2077 to the quality many hoped it would be at launch.
